What It Takes to Become a Professional Field Guide

Becoming a field guide is about more than time spent in the bush. It requires meeting recognised industry standards, consistent assessment, and the ability to guide professionally under real conditions.

At Kukama, training is built around the NQF2 Nature Site Guide qualification — the official entry-level requirement to work as a guide in South Africa.

You are assessed continuously on practical field skills, knowledge, and professional conduct — ensuring you are prepared for real guiding work, not just the idea of it.

You’ll receive all essential field gear at the start of the course, including binoculars, a backpack, and prescribed study materials.

This kit is valued at approximately €780 and ensures you are fully prepared for field-based training from day one.

Accommodation & Daily Living

Full-board accommodation is included for the duration of the course, along with all meals and weekly laundry.

This allows you to focus entirely on your training without managing external living arrangements.

Training at Maloba Game Reserve

As part of your experience, you will spend time training at Maloba Game Reserve, a private reserve in the heart of South Africa with real wildlife activity and home to some of the iconic Big Five species.

For many international students, this becomes one of the most memorable parts of their journey, living and learning in a completely different environment surrounded by African landscapes and wildlife. You may encounter some of Africa’s iconic species, including members of the Big Five, while developing your skills in real conditions.

This is not an excursion or a tourist experience. It is a dedicated training placement where you apply what you have learned in a new and challenging environment. Working in varied terrain and real wildlife conditions builds adaptability, confidence, and a deeper connection to nature.

This is an intensive, structured programme designed to prepare you for real work in the wildlife and guiding industry.
